William james proposed that there are 3 ideas of self that people can identify. Instead of looking into what a person is inside, he thought about what the outward traits that you can see are. Each of these multiple selfs can be important in different situations. Individual self: our self as an individual, our traits, likes and dislikes. How do we think of ourselves as a friend, as a sibling, etc. Collective self: pertains to the group to which we identify.
