Social context: sense of self may shift dramatically: parent vs friend, bicultural- act differently with different groups of people. Independent self- more about yourself and your own actions. Interdependent- seeing yourself based on other people: cultural differences. Independent is more common in north america and western europe cultures. Interdependent- more prominent in the rest of the world- asia, latin america, Sociometer hypothesis: more specific than genera contingencies of self-worth account. Less likely to show unrealistic abilities that they possess. Self-presentation: presenting the person that we would like others to believe we are. Impression management: public face-awareness of what others think of us, private face- awareness of our own internal feelings, thoughts and preferences. Its important b/c the type od attribution made will influence how you respond: external attribution, behaviour is explained by aspects of the situation, explanatory style- a person"s habitual way of explain events, explanatory dimensions.
