Emblems: are gestures used to communicate. Ex: piece sign, giving the finger. Non verbal.
Thin slice: you get a quick slice of a persons behavior and determine what you got out of it.
Ease of attribution: we can take little things and make big stories about them. Come up with
complex explanations about their behavior. Attribution is very automatic. Attribution how
people explain causes of behavior and events.
Internal attribution: talking about who you think a person is. Attributing the persons behavior
to who the person is on the inside.
External attribution: attributing the persons behavior rather to the situation that they are in
than who they are. So you still have the same beliefs about who the person is rather, the
situation just changed the way they acted.
Fundamental attribution error: when we perceive other peoples behavior, we have the
tendency to overestimate the persons internal attribution. When u see someone else do
something bad you claim its because of who the person is, rather when you do something bad
you tend to attribute it externally, saying it was cause of the situation that you behaved that
way, rather than it being who you are.
Perceptual salience: we tend to overestimate the causal role of imformation we have available
to us. Ex: we will go out not worried about nothing but when we see that there was a mugging
on tv, we are more scared when we go out even tho the chance of being hurt remains the same
as it were before we saw the mugging.
Correspondence bias: in general we have a bias towards assuming that peple behave the way
they do because it’s who they are. It’s a cognitive bias. Tendency to assume behavior is a
product of who people are. Fae is there is a behavior how do you define it.
Consensus: do other people behave in this way. Someone behaves a certain way do other
people behave that way too. is the behavior distinct to that person or do other people behave
in the same way.
Distinctiveness: does this person behave like this with other stimuli. is the behavior happen in
other situations as well.
Consistency: does this person behave like this over time. Distinctiveness talking about different
situations and different stimuli. consistency is talking about the exact same behavior happening
over periods of time.
