Document Summary
Lecture 1 developmental psychology: theories & methods. Development is a field of study that tries to account for: changes that occur in various aspects of a person"s lifetime (from moment of conception to moment of death). Researchers try to outline changes that occur during childhood and then they try to figure out the processes that influence these changes. Charles darwin: showed us that children could be scientifically examined, children weren"t valued like they are now due to there being many child deaths and the limited medical knowledge available about the infections that affected them. 19th century: policy against child labour introduced, but even today not universal. Continuous shifts and series of quantitative behaviours. Depends on the type of lens that development is viewed in (e. g. , macro vs. micro) At every stage of development, the child has different ways of problem solving. Looks at causal factors (researchers disagree on amount of importance placded on these factors)
