Lecture 10
Michael J. Bailey believed that homosexuality is biologically determined but he is
anti-gay—If it is defective you can find a cure and if you can’t and it is genetic,
abortion.
READ ABOUT EYSENCKS DIFFERENT LEVELS.
SUPERFACTOR—Eysenck first came up with two super factors—and then one
later on.
oIntroversion Vs Extraversion
Degree to which a person is outgoing and participative in relating
to other people
oEmotionality Vs Stability
Individual’s adjustment to the environment and the stability of his
or her behaviour over time
oPSYCHOTICISM
Characterized by the loss of distortion of reality and inability to
distinguish between reality and fantasy
Psychotic= A break from reality, (we all have a small break from
reality—DAYDREAMING)
Eysenck said that Psychoticism can be characterized by these traits
Aggressive
Antisocial
Cold
Creative
Egocentric
Impersonal
Impulsive
Tough minded
Pathetic
A LOT OF THESE TRAITS OVERLAP WITH THE
OTHER DIMENSION.
BIGGEST PROBLEM: RESEARCH SHOWS THAT
PSYCHOTICISM PREDICTS DEVELOPMENT OF
PERSONALITY DISORDERS ESPECIALLY MORE
BIZARRE ONES LIKE PARANOID PERSONALITY
DISORDER—PREDICTS PSYCHOTIC EXPERIENCES
Prefer violent films, hang out with rebellious people
EYSENCK CONFUSES PYCHOTOCISM AND
PSYCHOPATHY. –Hes adding to the stigma. Hes basically
saying that there is overlap between the two groups=OFFENSIVE.
Most people hear about schizophrenia on the news they hear all
these bad stories and they become afraid of psychotic.

Both groups have problems connecting with people but in different
ways.
STUDY ON PSYCHOTISM
Perceptions of Parenting style and Psychoticism over 12-month period in 12 year
olds.
322 males, 332 females in Australia (84% tracking)
Studied 3 parenting styles, Authoritarian, Permissive, Authoritative to see which
one would predict Psychoticism
oAuthoritarian did not correlated with Psychoticism (Eysenck’s definition)
oPermissive correlated with Psychoticism in BOYS
oHaving a authoritative parents reduces Psychoticism—but when
controlling for time 2—only reduced for boys
oKids perceived parents as authoritative or authoritarian or permissive
oPeople can argue against importance of parenting. The parent’s pass down
genes that affect
Eysenck critical of self-report nature of personality inventories
Used CRITERION ANALYSIS to improve inventory questionnaire
oDon’t rely on self report, take people that you know for a fact are high on a
certain trait and compare them to a group of people that
oIdentified two groups of people—those with each end of continuum of
personality variable.
oGave each group inventory and examined differences in responses
oDetermined probabilities and developed questionnaire to distinguish between
two groups
oHIS PSYCHOTICISM SCORES DID NOT DIFFERENTIATE
PSYCHOTICS FROM THOSE WHO AREN’T THE WAY THAT
EYSENCK CLAIMED.—HE SHOULD HAVE ABANDANED THE
CLUSTER CALLED PSYCHOTICISM , BUT DIDN’T
oEysenck theory on the brain. RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM,
VISUAL BRAIN. What is each one associated with.
Extroverts are very different from Introverts with regard to how they
react to stimulation. INTROVERTS ARE HYPERSENSITIVE.
EXTROVERTS ARE KIND OF DEAD INSIDE, SO THEY DO
THINGS PUMP UP THEIR STIMULATION.
EYSENCK SHOWED PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF
INTELLIGENCE SHOWED DIFFERENTLY IN EEGS AND
BRAIN IMAGING.
Brain images of Strait women, Strait men and gay men. Smell male
pheromones.
