Thanatos: the death instinct ; generated a lot of controversy over the years , consisted of aggressive forces (aggressive thoughts and actions) and desired to return person to inorganic phase where they will have peace) Human existence: constant struggle between life and death instinct, between individual"s desires and society. No evidence about proposed division of parts. Ideas of conflict and behavioral compromise among forces that remain important. Mind was like an iceberg, only conscious mind was visible, above the water. Preconscious & and unconscious minds were below the iceberg. Conscious: stuff that we are aware of.
