Anxiety disorder diagnosed when subjectively experienced feelings of anxiety are clearly present. Comorbidity symptoms are applicable across different categories, and etiological factors are similar across categories. Anxiety disorders = most common psychological disorder (more common in women) Phobias a disrupting, fear-mediated avoidance that is out of proportion to the danger actually posed and is recognized by the sufferer as groundless to fear a neutral object) and operant conditioning (reduce the fear by escaping the cs) Prepared learning ppl tend to only fear certain objects (prepared stimuli) Diathesis is needed not everybody exposed to traumatic experience develops phobia. Thoughts serve as a predisposition for phobia. Socially anxious ppl are more aware of the image they present to others, more concerned with evaluation, and are preoccupied with hiding imperfections. Social phobia linked to: an attentional bias to negative social info, perfectionistic standards, high degree of public self consciousness. Behaviourists looked at function of the phobia (how were they acquired)
