Document Summary

Chapter 7: somatic symptom disorders and dissociative disorders. Bodily symptoms that suggest a physical defect or dysfunction, but no physiological basis can be found. No physiological, neurological or biological basis for both. Tend to occur after a traumatic event (for both) Not likely to appear from nowhere, usually after some serious life stressor. Preoccupation with imagined or exaggerated defects in physical appearance. Culture of narcissism; selfie, fb makes us aware of how we appear in front of others. Skin, hips, breast for female, penis, height for male. In order for this to be a disorder have to cause distress and disability. E. g. prof has bad skin, self conscious of it, but doesn"t disable him, still giving us a lec. Often comorbid w/ other disorder (e. g. depression, social phobia, eating disorders, thoughts of suicide, substance abuse (alcohol/drugs/laxatives/pain killers), personality disorder (e. g. narcissim) Often chronic (i. e. it"s there and it"s gonna stay there, despite plastic surgery & etc. )
