What is abnormal behavior?
oTest of working memory
oPsychologist uses it to determine whether or not someone has good working
Most normal people perform at the average (in the middle)
Problem: some things don’t fall into this type of curve.
•The Case of “The Men’s Room”
•Violation of norms
oMakes those that are observing uncomfortable
oBehaviours of Psychopath. Psychopaths are statistically infrequent and
violate several norms. BUT psychopaths are not distressed by it.
•Disability or dysfunction (or impairment)
oYou can at some points in the year have several dysfunctions. BUT if it
doesn’t affect you going to work, having relationships, going to school—YOU
ARE IMPAIRED BUT NOT DISABLED.
oKleptomaniac—wealthy people are not expected to steal things. They are
constantly afraid of having no money
