Document Summary
Maximally discriminant facial movement coding system (max; izard, Facial action coding system (facs; ekman & friesen, 1978). Facial action units (aus) rated most characteristic of emotion. Looks at facial structure while emotions are being displayed. Certain emotions are universally expressed and known. Discrimination of these emotions have been extensively studied for both adults and young children. Suggest that positive emotions are more reliably discriminated than negative ones. Discrimination of basic emotions at 4 m. Examined 3- to 5-year olds" production and recognition of emotions as well as adults. Both adults and young children are able to recognize a happy face than others. Children probably better at expressing rather than recognition. Basic emotions have dedicated neural circuitry in which a triggering stimulus produces a response. Autonomic nervous system, behavioural tendency, and facial expression. Because internal to person, emotion recognition is automatic for everyone. Because adaptive, emotion recognition is present in everyone and should emerge early for everyone.
