Dsm: came out in 1952, it was not a textbook for classification, until third dsm. The version require the category, but not symptoms for diagnosis. Dsm defines a disorder, it will not be without controversy. Mental disorders are usually associate with significant distress or disability in social, occupational or other important activities. Blame the things that happens with regular life and diagnosis with things from dsm. Excludes an expectable and culturally sanctioned response to a particular event- Example: it can cause personal distress, shocking to look at it is not a mental disorder because of the particular event. Deviant behavior (e. g. , political, religious, or sexual) conflicts that are primarily between the individual and society (unless the deviance or conflict is a symptom of a dysfunction in the individual) Example: gandhi; went on a hunger strike , he became anorexic, and this was not in the dsm. Based on the result the clinician test if they are mild or major.
