Emotional state marked by great sadness and feelings of worthlessness and guilt. People will be able to function with anxiety, but with regards to depression it tends to prevent one from engaging them from their daily activities. Starts around the age of 14 because individuals start caring about what others think about them. Emotional state or mood of intense, but unfounded elation accompanied by irritability, hyperactivity, talkativeness, flight of ideas, distractibility, and impractical(grandiose) plans. Dsm-5 requires the presence of 5 of the following symptoms for at least 2 weeks. Depressed mood or loss of interest and pleasure must be one of the 5 symptoms. Sad, depression mood, most of the day, nearly every day. Loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities (anadonia) Shift in activity level (lethargic (loss of motivation, don"t want to get out of bed) Poor appetite and weight loss / increase appetite and weight gain. Complaints or evidence of difficulty in concentrating (slowing thinking or indecisiveness)
