Document Summary

Lecture 6: attention: attention is necessary to unlock many other mental abilities, we need attention in many cases to support our ability to learn. Be it language, memory, so on and so forth. William james and attention: his description of attention is complex, it"s nuanced, and it captures what a complex construct attention really is. Conscious control of attention: conscious attention is when you choose to pay attention to something. James also acknowledged that there were other elements to attention as well: conscious control is the taking possession by the mind in a clear and vivid form, attention isn"t necessarily what you"re looking at. It"s where your mind is directed in the world. For our conscious processing: focalization- concentration of consciousness or of its essence. It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others. And so when i pay attention to something, it is often at the expense of other things that are out there.
