PSYB45 Lecture 20
We have immediate reinforcers for our problem behaviour
oProblem behaviour is going to be relative to the circumstance
oDelayed reinforcers for alternative desired behaviours
Eg university student and your friend brought movie for 3 hrs so ask you if want to watch
movie or go to class
oSo although you might like the movie, you should probably study for the exam
first
oEverytime we go through our life we have an opportunity to chose a sequence of
circumstances
oIf you recognize that and you dont take that as a setback then youre better off
than the rest
Eg some people take behaviour mod program to change something like their health
oEg lose 600 calories a day
oSo they jump into it
oBut then they dont succeed
oEven if they are really motivated they dont succeed
oSo why is this?
oDrastic\
So why is it too drastic?
Too many factors, steps at once
If you respond gradually its better
oSo training your body to react a certain way to your environment
oIf do it too fast your body isnt used to it
oThat behaviour of eating too much food and not exercising is gradual
oSo if you want to move back 10 yrs to where you were before you have to do it
gradually

PSYB45 Lecture 20
oWhatever goal youre trying to achieve you need to do it gradually
Behavioural deficiencies
oImmediate small punishers vs. reinforcers that are cumulatively significant
Eg want to study something like cell and molecular biology, in the long
run this effort will be positive
Small punishers is exercising until it hurts (eg when do it right away it
hurts first)
Behaviour in long run is cardiovascular composition changes over time
oImmediate small punisher vs. immediate but highly improbable major punisher if
behaviour does not occur
Someone who has bulimia and person makes a choice as to whether binge
and purge
Prof rides motorcycle and in certain states dont need to wear a helmet so
he doesnt ride it there (which is really bad)
Immediate small punisher is wearing uncomfortable helmet
The highly improbable punisher is falling off the bike and
smashing their face and brain
You might hurt everyone else at the same time
Eg if get hurt then your family has to take care of you for the rest of
your life
oThird one
Small punisher is putting on sunscreen
The major punisher being the possibility of getting skin cancer
Flossing your teeth (small punisher)
Long term is cavities, tartar, etc
oCan avoid all of this by engaging in behaviours by engaging
in small punishers
