PSYB45 Lecture 7
Eg picture
oDrink reservoir where one is out
oMens/womens washroom
Stimulus discrimination training can be natural or taught
Reinforcement
oEg when other specific antecedents are present behavior is more likely to occur in
the future
ABC’s make up contingency of reinforcement
Eg. Telephone
oPhysical object with certain design
oIf it emits an audible noise (rings) and you pick it up then you can talk to someone
oIf it doesnt emit noise and you pick it up then no one on the other side to talk to
Eg person laughing
oWhen with friends can tell jokes that are not necessarily conservative
oWhen with parents, grandparents cant tell the same type of jokes
oNot learnt from birth, you learn it along the way
oAntecedent is the environment youre in with the people youre with?
oEg you can still tell same joke to same people but saying it on the street and
saying it in a classroom are two different environments
So in one environment its ok but the other its disgusting
Stimulus discrimination training
oSD instead of writing antecedent stimulus
oOnly links to certain antecedents
oEg SD is phone ringing
www.notesolution.com
PSYB45 Lecture 7
But it also serves as S-delta which is a designation for stimuli for
antecedents where behavior will not be reinforced
So telephone sitting here without ringing indicates that you shouldnt pick
up the phone
oSD says that behavior will be reinforced in the future
oS-delta says that behavior will not be reinforced in the future, aka extinguished if
it hasnt been already
oEg walk across; dont walk across, keep arms close, mens/womens bathroom,
electrical razor forgot to charge so no point picking it up to use it and saying that
you should use something else because even if you pick it up to use it , it wont
shave
oEg driving then gas light starts blinking or gauge starts going down then imagine
you have to go and get gas
What sort of reinforcing properties are associated with that?
Negative reinforcement
Antecedent stimulus
oA lot of communication skills are learnt through this process
oEg when learning a new language
If you respond a certain way and its right and you receive praise
Or if you say it wrong then no praise
Echolalia – when you can repeat what other people say to you
oHammer training
Outcome slide you see that all three of the objects there are hammers
So generalization training if child knows they are all hammers
oPunishment
Eg car parked away from fire hydrant
If park beside there, theres a chance that you’ll get a fine

PSYB45 Lecture 7
Stimulus control
oWhen an antecedent stimulus has the ability to evoke a behavior to occur in the
future
oBasically signals to the target agent eg child, that if you behave in a particular
away when a antecedent is present , reinforcement will occur or in opposite way,
punishment will occur
oEg drink machine and one is out of stock
Antecedent stimulus is the sign showing the drink it out
S-delta is putting your cup under the one thats out
oEg movie theatre
There are certain behaviors you do and dont do
Eg people who have blackberries and I phones and texting to person
beside them and its so bright that its annoying
Eg when the lights go down for some classes behaviors sometimes change
Eg chatting with friends but when lights come down then everyone
goes quiet because behavior is not going to be reinforced
oEg friends will stop looking at you when lights go down
and will someone ignore you
oMost things can be antecedent stimulus
Generalization
oNot exactly SD
Just similar
oEg if no generalization then if you learn to snowboard down one slope and if you
go to another slope then you cant snowboard anymore
oParents and child
Ask you to do something but same person/voice/language and receive
praise when they do it
