Document Summary

Week 10 july 17 th , 2015: fundamental frequency: lowest frequency of harmonic spectrum, auditory system is acutely sensitive to natural relationships between harmonics. E. g. , vowels: missing fundamental effect: when you hear harmonic sound, spectrum of multiple sounds stacked on each other following a regular pattern, there is one sound of a pitch of the fundamental frequency. You don"t need fundamental frequency in harmonic. Can still hear the sound even if the first frequency is missing; still sounds like that pitch even though there is no power there for the first harmonic. 2nd, 3rd, 4th harmonic overlap in peaks every 4 ms. Added up they yield a fluctuation in energy at 250 hz. Had people listen to a sound ( ee ) and play a selected sound to them that did not sound like the original sound (different power of distribution). When you hear the strange sound the second sound presented sounds like the original ( ee ).
