Attention not only operates in the external world but can also help us pay attention to internal thoughts competition of things in our environment for our attention. If attention happened early when information first comes in (at registration) we might miss out on important information. One side of the headphones plays something different than the other side. You can have participants pay attention to one ear, the other ear, or both. When someone pays attention to only one side they do a good job of paying attention to the information. If only focusing on one ear you miss out on important details coming into the other ear.
