3 major categories of aphasia(problem with language)
receptive aphasia receiving and decoding
intergrative aphasia comprehension and forming language
expressive aphasia problems in language output
- Receptive (pure word deafness)
problems and relating incoming sounds into representations
to understand them
can hear it but cant distinguish the language, sounds like
gibberish
can read, write and speak but cannot understand
damage in primary receptive area
-Integrative
problems in selecting and arranging meaningful units into
comprehensive speech…what it means
Wernickes aphasia (Jargon junk aphasia)
o Speak unintelligent statements, loss of awareness of
what language is
o Chatter but make no sense at all, proper tone and
rhythm
o Can read aloud, but don’t understand, respond poorly to
commands, cannot name objects
Nominal aphasia (anomia)
o Trouble coming up with names for objects
o Angular gyrus damage
Conduction aphasia
o Cannot repeat what you say, but have good
comprehension and speech
o Severed pathways
Transcortical aphasia
o Motor problem with output
o Sensory problem with comrehension
Isolation of speech area
o Cant produce fluent speech or understand, repeat like a
parrot
-Expressive (broca’s)
damage to Brocas area which converts ideas/perceptions into
speech
severe: cant say small words
difficult to form sentences, easier to repeat, reading is slow,
lots of spelling errors
