PSYB65H3 Lecture : lecture notes 06 - psychiatric disorders
Document Summary
Gene coding: seems to share same genes with other disease as depression, mania but with different influence intensity. Neurology: frontal lobe may not be functioning normally. Genetics: 1% in gengeral population; 10%-15% within families. Most effective drugs used to calm down schizophrenic patients are blocking dopa mine receptors. Dopamine level in schizophrenic patient"s brain is normal, but dopamine recepto rs are problematic. Reduce dopamine too much will cause parkinson"s disease (lack of dopamine) mood disorders depression-- too negative. When treating high blood pressure, patient who taking razepam got depression -> depression may associated with biogenic amine. Patients taking aldomet(block synthesis of norepinephrine) also got depression. 5hiaa(biproduct of metabolism of serotonin) reduction in depress patients" brai n ->reduce 5hiaa, reduce metabolism of serotonin. Treatment: use drugs to increase biogenic amine level (most effective) tricyclic anti-depressant: block serotonin and ne reuptake to i ncrease their activities, but influence little on dopamine inhibit mao, more transmitter release -> to treat depression.
