Document Summary

Motivation: a process that activates and directs behavior: biological, behavioral (ie. putting a sweater on when you feel cold) Regulation of body temperature: set point, mechanisms for detecting deviation, internal and behavioral elements to regain set point. Body temp. same as environment = amphibians, reptiles and most fish. Hypothalamus: core temp is ideally 37 degrees (narrow set zone) Body processes for heat production come into play if temp is around 36. 5. Body processes for heat loss come into play if its around 37. 5: adjusts quickly. Brainstem: sets zone is larger if temp is below 36 or above 38, we wont see the processes to bring it back the regular temp spinal cord, even larger set zone. Dont see changes occurring unless we see outside range of 35. The higher an animal"s surface to volume ratio the harder it must work to maintain core temperature: sa: skin, volume: whats inside, rat needs to work harder to maintain core temperature.
