Document Summary

According to campbell"s (1965) realistic conflict theory, when groups are in competition for scarce resources, feelings of hostility and prejudice towards the other group will emerge. E. g. , when people perceive an out-group as having similar work-related personality traits and abilities, realistic-conflict-induced prejudice tends to emerge (zarate et al. , 2004). Competition arise prejudice and stereotype: competition for resource. Phase 1: boys form in-group identity: chose a name and did activities together to foster bonding and group identity. Phase 2: the groups compete against one another the winning team would win prizes, which created out-group prejudice. Phase 3: the boys were brought back into contact with one another to see if it would reduce prejudice in line with the contact hypothesis . Then, sherif and colleagues introduced a superordinate goal (clearing a water faucet & fixing a bus to take them home), which he speculated would elicit intergroup cooperation towards a common goal, which successfully reduced out-group hostility.
