PSYC12H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Implicit Stereotype, Spatula, Research Question
Document Summary
The implicit association between black skin and guns is leading police officers to see. Guns in people"s hands with deadly consequences. Polices sees everything that african americans holds is a gun. Wallet, keys, candy bar, spatula, groceries (bread), phones a gun. Implicit bias that blacks are always associated with violence, crime, and gun: police implicitly associated blacks with holding a gun, even things that vaguely assemble like a gun. Visual perception is shaped by implicit bias: black skin & crime example. These atrociously high numbers are generally thought (by social psychologists) to be due to implicit bias rather than (or at least in addition to) overt prejudice. The implicit association between black people and criminality may lead officers to engage in non-conscious racial profiling. The recognition that implicit racial biases can be deadly, even in the absence of conscious bias, is becoming increasingly commonplace in mainstream discussions of police violence.
