PSYC12H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Nazi Propaganda, Tutsi, Cockroach
Document Summary
Dehumanization: intro: people have a tendency to spontaneously humanize or dehumanize objects, animals, and people, dehumanization is evidenced when outgroup members are perceived as relatively more. For example, in his landmark book (brown tide rising) on metaphorical representations in popular media, otto santa ana (2002) noted that words such as swarm or crawl are used to describe mexican immigrants. Why does dehumanization facilitate immoral acts: dehumanization is a precursor to moral exclusion, the process by which stigmatized groups are placed outside the boundary in which moral values, rules, and considerations of fairness apply (opotow, 1990, p. 1). Usually, violating moral rules and norms leads to feelings of remorse and guilt. Lecture 5: dehumanization: how prejudice affects thinking and empathy: dehumanization is conceived as a motivated phenomenon that serves individual, interpersonal, or intergroup functions. E. g. , relief from moral emotions, enabling or post-hoc justification for violence, provision of a sense of superiority, enforcement of social dominance, etc.
