Ageism: stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination based on age. Very openly used stereotype wouldn"t see that for different races/cultures/religions. Although largely applied to older adults, can also apply to young-juvenile ageism. Importance of studying elderly: elderly population will double by 2030. Unlike other prejudices, elderly are out-group that will one day become in-group: and if you believe the stereotypes deeply, it will affect you on a deep level when you"re older. Patronizing behaviour: over-accommodation, baby talk o o o. These typically happen when you have good intentions however, you end up hurting them instead: comes across as: you"re less than me . Method: evaluative priming task (iat) with undergraduate students: old vs. young subliminally primed (55ms, positive vs. Negative traits presented after prime: dv: rt to words (faster rt = stronger association) Example: see old associate selfish (negative trait) = fast reaction. Results: negative words are more associated with old and positive are less.
