Document Summary

This article reviews evidence about when social categories (e. g. , group membership) are activated by perceivers, when activated categories are actually used to guide behavior, and to what extent category activation and use can be consciously controlled. Learning goal (lg) mb1: you should understand the logic behind using accessibility as a means of assessing whether a category has been activated or not. You should also be able to describe work using measures of accessibility to argue for or against the automaticity of category activation. Subgoal (sg) mb1. 1: you should be familiar with the study by dovidio et al. as well as the critique of how to interpret this study by m&b. The answer to this question has important implications for how easy it may be to avoid prejudiced behavior. You should be able to construct an argument for or against the automaticity of category activation, using the multiple lines of evidence described in macrae & bodenhausen.
