In the present studies, participants found themselves in the position of being evaluated by another person, which implies a position of vulnerability and dependency. Later, they also found themselves in a direct competition with someone (who was either the evaluator or a different person). Either of these circumstances might cause narcissists to attempt to assert their own superiority through aggressive action.
