Lecture 07 (cognition and perception)
If...Then....Profiles
Meaningful patterns of variability (Mischel and Shoda, 1995)
-the behavior is based on both the person and the situation
-Feature of if-then profiles invite questions about a person’s construal of situations,
motivations, goals, and expectations
-Cognitive affective Units (CAUs)
-categories/constructs
-expectations and beliefs
-emotions
-goals
-competencies/Self-regulatory plans
Cognitive Affective Processing system
-CAUs operate within an interconnected network... to ultimately predict behavior
-Different pathways become activated in relation to features of the situations
-situations are encoded (in the encoding process) which activate different CAUs based on
the interactions among mediators and the situation, ultimately leading to behavior
-Physical culture: Institutions, rites, practices (eg. gym, bank, college) - it is something
concrete and very specific.
-Subjective culture: cultural beliefs, meaning systems (eg. protestant work, ethic, personal
agency)
-Nominal situations (eg. exams, working out, power breakfasts)
Cultural Cognitive Affective processing systems
-application :
-sensitivity to race-based relations
-dynamic that is based on particular experiences being more likely to occur to
members of a particular group
-psychology of minority groups members must be understood within the groups
own context and historical background
-Starting with physical culture: (eg. segregated neighbors, discrepant quality of schools)
-this will lead to subjective culture: (eg. societal stereotypes, prejudice)
-Nominal situations (eg. work settings, rejection sensitivity dynamic in the person being
prejudiced)
-nominal situations apply to feature of the situation
-subjective culture influences availability/accessibility of CAUs
-the CAUs are activated by the situation and subjective culture, which also leads us to
appraisals of the features of the situation (going back in the cycle of the map)
-the final product of this map is a “If.. then... profile”
-the behaviors that we have can affect our situations (ex. if you are always being an
aggressive person, you may find yourself picking fights), your behaviors determine what
kind of situations you put yourself in (self-selection processes)
-potential for cultural shifts (your behaviors cause you to try and change/affect your
subjective culture)
