PSYC14H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Rubber Band, Individualism, Operationalization
Document Summary
Researchers asked them to make a family meal and then asked the family to just eat together and they filmed the process. However, this was awkward and people kept getting up from the table and leaving. In this culture, families don"t have meals together but the researchers didn"t know that. Objectivity for psychologists is achieved by using controlled situations. Anthropologists pride with being very involved with their research which may lead to bias but also their findings could be a lot more accurate. Individualist: value identity of individual: collectivist: value placed on culture, we know a lot about the differences so that"s why we look at this so much. But, there are a lot of other domains that we don"t know about: we always tend to compare north america and some east-asian country. Tightness vs. looseness: some people like things rigid they like things exactly how they want it, looseness is being too flexible everything is ok, easy going.
