e.g. when you’re doing art, you manipulate the stuff

2 types of directions of flow
1. top-down: abstract to concrete
e.g. if the Pope says,THIS IS WHERE IT'S AT,” everybody has to listen
e.g. they've got the power, looking from above
2. bottom-up: concrete to abstract
e.g. democratic system
e.g. top dogs listen to the people at the bottom
e.g. you've got a voice, you're looking up
top-down and bottom-up are important

e.g. Prof had two students who were soldiers and ended up with PTSD
how PTSD works: when recollecting an event that happened in the past, the thought wakes you
up to the horror of the event
first, you were thinking of the event
then, you get into the details
a thought comes to you and wakes up the memories that were stored in your limbic system; you
think of the event and then the details come back
e.g. BF breaks up with you; never a highlight, you didn't expect it
it's there and produces all of these feelings inside of you
you think of the breakup/relationship
wakes up the feelings inside of you
continuous (cycle)
feedback-loop
e.g. similar to the thermometer at home
it was cold and then it got hot
(info from the system feeds back into it and turns it off)
inhibitory model
e.g. You crap around with your friends, you smoke/drank. Your friend says to you, “you're a little
out of control” and you calm down.
sometimes you can be too conscious
e.g. how to no longer say “uhm” when you speak
1. imagine you're on one shore
separating you from the next shore is a path of stones
2. only speak when you're standing on the stones
be silent when you're not on the stones
stones represent points you want to make
“uhm” is a space filler
moving, then inhibition
e.g. thermometer arrives at the desired temperature
both loops
continuity and self-correction
feedback: you behave, then there's correction
spontaneity
feed-forward: animal thing
e.g. when you can't stop a reaction, need to learn feedback
(that was looking at complementarities)
