- Objective: supposedly about the external public world but actually reflects internal learned
conventions and standards
- Subjective: supposedly about the internal private world but actually is projected onto the
imagined world out there
- Neither is what it seems. Nothing is absolutely true. Objective knowledge is not as objective as
you think. Even when you take a photograph of the class, you are choosing to take it from a
certain side, certain angle
Let’s look at the big picture:
- You cannot have emotions without thoughts and vice versa
- Mind and body are always together, feelings and thoughts are always together You cannot
have one without the other
- Every time you have an emotion, it’s cause you interpreted the situation a certain way
- Thinking always leaves a residue
- What kinds of rules govern bodily activity or mental activity?
- Bodily activity Mechanisms of the mind
Adaptation and Search for Meaning TABLE FOR EXAM ********* (Behaviourists and Cognitivists)
- Organic Adaptation: Lobster cutting hand off to run away
- Adapting to the world’s action. If you’re going to adapt, you better have strong stimulus
Emphasis (Look at situation coming at you, focus on now and what’s coming. Gotta make
decisions. You’ll be dead if you don’t. VIGILANTE!)
- Appraisal: Good or bad for me? Right or wrong?
- Feature: Qualities, not the whole, matching against the list
- Matching: Features on the list with people
- Self-Terminating: You stop the search when you find what you need
- Biological foundation with the influence of animal post and evolutionary influences.
Search for meaning and reaction (People into Freudian, Phenomenological)
- When things are related to your past, things may trigger past memories, especially if they’re
important for your life
- Influence of social past: may be meaningful for someone but not for the other
- Social Structure: What social class do you come from will shape how things mean to you now.
- Response Emphasis:
- Gestalt: Whole Situation
- Closure: E.g. Messaging someone from many years ago
- Exhaustive: Complete, to understand a situation, there’s always gonna be so many facts within a
situation
