Emotional intelligence includes things like theory of mind, interpreting your own and other people"s emotions. The relationship that a child has with a parent shapes their ability to navigate in an emotionally intelligent way in their daily life as they grow up. Differential emotions theory basic emotions are hard wired and present from birth (biologically engrained) Differential in that every emotion has a unique biological signature and unique expression. Differentiation theory infants start out w/ 2 basic emotion states (negative vs. positive) E. g. when something is wrong, babies indicate this by crying, fussing, etc general negative emotion state; can"t categorize it any further. Functionalist theory emotions are social, differ depending on context, and serve communicative fn. Emotions develop via social interactions and infants use emotional lang. to communicate what they need. Emotional intelligence: ability to communicate, and understand one"s emotions.
