Selective impairment of cognitive system specialized for comprehending and formulating language, leaving other cognitive capacities relatively intact. Not a problem of sensation, motor function, or intellect. Dysarthria: speech impairment caused by motor weakness, incoordination and or slowness, speech may sound slurred, caused by damage to motor neurons innervating speech muscles. Paraphasias: speech errors, substituting words, happens frequently, may make up unique words. Semantic: error in related in meaning to target word: e. g. wife or husband. Phonemic: error related in sound structure: aka. Mixed: error related in meaning & sound: rat vs. cat. Unrelated: error not obviously related to target, fork vs. Neologisms: a made up word which follows phonological rules: e. g. furbish. Environmental influences: loud or distracting noises, background distractions.
