Lecture 4: behavioural interventions for abi and dementia. Acquired brain injury (abi): damage caused to the brain after birth caused by either : a traumatic injury (tbi) e. g. car accident, fall assault or sports-related injury, a medical problem or disease e. g. The brain not getting enough oxygen (heart attack), a tumor, brain aneurysm, infection or a stroke. It is not related to: a congenital disorder or developmental disability, a process that gradually damages the brain. Sabaz, et al. (2015): study of 507 severe traumatic brain injury clients living in community settings: overall prevalence = 54% Behaviours include: anger/aggression/poor frustration tolerance, lack of cooperation/buy-in, lack of initiation, disinhibition/poor social skills, and inappropriate sexual behaviour. Usually consists of a sudden and temporary increase in the response"s frequency, followed by the eventual decline and extinction of the behaviour targeted for elimination. The emphasis of a behavioural approach is to focus on positive behaviour, which you would like to see.
