Document Summary
Dominant view: personality emerges early & continues to change in meaningful ways throughout the lifespan. Most personality development occurs in childhood, & personality is stable by end of adolescence: you may see some changes in adolescence and that may be due to some life experiences / transitions. Lifespan perspective of personality: based on plasticity principle personality traits are open systems that can be influences by e at any age: active period of personality development appears to be between age of 20-40. Emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness increase as one ages. Overemphasis on chronological age: masks individual variability/differences, ex: erikson"s stage theory, freud"s stage theory not based on empirical data. No clear markers to denote start or finish of stage. Deviations from norm may mistakenly be seen as maladjustment. Young people in their late teens and early 20s generally undergo a # of transitions: Leaving home to go to uni/collage: entering the world of work, entering into committed relationships.
