Central premise: individuals have innate tendencies towards personal growth & vitality that are either satisfied/thwarted by their immediate e: focuses on how ppl interpret internal & external stimulus imputs. Motivation = process that starts with physiological/psychological need that activates behavior/drive that is aimed at goal. Empirically based theory of human motivation, development, and wellness. Theory focuses on types, (rather than just amount), of motivation: paying particular attention to autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and a-motivation as predictors of performance, relational, and well-being outcomes. Also addresses social conditions that enhance vs diminish these types of motivation. Examines people"s life goals or aspirations: distinguishes between intrinsic vs extrinsic life goals in relation to performance & psychological health.
