Document Summary

Traits used to compare mean general on average (more than the normal, less than the normal, etc) Behaviour varies (fluctuates); behaviour is reactive/responsive to situations. Meaningful for left possibilities: the mean differs how people are in states meaning for right possibilities: the mean only shows that they are different in many ways. Determines how many observations would be necessary to measure traits. Original trait = high between, low within variation. Fleeson s trait = low between, high within variation. Within variation: states (traits) and feelings both fluctuate. Average density distribution: average person shows every level of trait. States are not predictable, location of the means of each trait is stable. Error: the measures are not perfect in obtaining the data. Variation of situation: normative influence of situations; given situation affects everyone the same way (ie. class room, everyone become quiet) Person x situation interaction: the impacts of situations are different from people (being more extraverted when surrounded by more people)
