Legal definition: behaviour against criminal code committed by those who hasn"t reached adulthood. Teens under 18 charged with crimes begin in family or juvenile courts. Social definition: youthful behaviours considered inappropriate (aggression, intimidation, truancy, bullying, theft, vandalism, substance abuse) Psychological definition: conduct disorder, antisocial behaviour, externalizing disorder. Conduct disorder- habitual misbehavior (stealing, running away, setting fires, skipping school, destroying property) Antisocial behaviour- involves harmful behavioural patterns; mental disorder (paraphilias, severe depression, psychotic disorders) Repetitive offenders are troublesome and these behaviours begin at a early ages; the more serious, the earlier had patterns appeared. Long incarceration is ineffective at reducing recidivism. Developmental trajectory reflects the changes in cognitive, emotional, and social growth; adverse experiences (violence, abuse, exposure to toxins, academic failure, loss of parent) Some children exhibit stubborn, defiant, disobedient behaviour early on and progress to mild then more severe forms of violence and criminal behaviour.
