Document Summary

A drug is anything that has a physiological effect in this class we look at drugs that mainly affect the nervous system, and mainly the synapses. If you think of the nervous system you can describe it as 2 types of cells neurons and glial cells. There are different types of neurons interneurons, sensory neurons and motor neurons. Interneurons generally communicate between adjacent neurons and form the bulk of the neurons in the body. Sensory takes information into the body from the outside. Afferent/ efferent -> direction of the action potential. Glial cells: not as understood as neural cells. They are of two types oligodendrocytes and schwann cells. Glial cells have the capability to wrap around neurons to form myelin sheaths. Myelin sheath is a fatty substance to improve the conduction of the action potential. It is a means fo insulating the signal form other different wires.
