Document Summary

Lecture #4 neurobiology of stress/stress & health. In a community in saskatchewan, 6 people took their lives in a short period of time: sometimes, there are problems with young people sniffing gas. There has been a focus on drug abuse as the reason for people taking their own lives. Isolation: lack of resources, difficultly speaking to family and friends for support, difficulty finding support in general. In a small community, confidentiality might be an issue. People born into a poor community are also born into the cycle. Poverty is what they know, see and learn. In the north, there are reserves in which the land is not economically viable. Consequently, there are no opportunities to create jobs or industry. Emergency workers who must work with the deceased"s family experience trauma: a clash in beliefs, during colonization, people were given reserve lands that were not the greatest lands in terms of resources.
