09 march 2018 / stress & health (part 1) Stress: physical and psychological response to internal/external stressors. Stressors: specific events or chronic pressures placing demands on a person or threatens her well-being. Health psychology: subfield of psychology that examines the relationship between physical health and psychological health. Correlation in psychological stress and physical illness. The scales sum up points for various stressful life events. Ex: death of a spouse = 100 points, divorce = 73, etc. We are more stressed out by events we cannot control. By psychiatrists: thomas holmes and richard rahe. Then compared scores on a stress scale to actual medical records. Some stressful events are more/less stressful in some cultures. In stress scale, it"s usually one-time stressful events. Chronic stressors = sources of stress that occurs continuously/repeatedly. Causes greater physical harm than one-time stress. One-time stressors have long-term effects on our physical health. Example: survivors of u. s 9/11 terrorist attack (2001)
