Psych lecture 33 Chapter 18- treatment of mental disorders Psychologists feel that mental disorders have to do with problems of adaptation; not the brain going wrong (stressful situations, etc) Talk therapy- client is upset and seeks help of psychotherapist and engages in the therapist for health Therapeutic alliance- individual enters into with therapist Most psychotherapies tend to be effective; because of the therapeutic alliance- provides safe setting, support Psychodynamic therapies= insight therapies (gaining inside on conflicts and hang- ups that take energy) Psychodynamic therapy Based on Freuds idea of repressed conflicts Put emphasis on sexual conflicts. These were explored in psychoanalysis Psychodynamic therapy also focuses on repressed conflicts, but the conflicts are not necessarily sexual in nature Freud- Mental disorders come from the amount of mental energy spent on dealing with conflicts and stressful life events the couch provides relaxation for client and free assoc
