PSYA02 Chapter 16 Lifestyle, Stress, and Human Heath Lecture 26 Slide 2: Stress: response to a stessor (something challenging in the environment, i.e. predators, pressure to reproduce, pressure to survive) Stress is closely related to fight-or-flight response A stress response includes: sympathetic arousal, stress hormones If you live with only a little bit of stress, its fineadaptive, even good for you, but with sustained stress for a long time, and with hormonal secretions occurring all the time; bad for health; Chronic or accumulated stress can be detrimental to health Slide 3: How do you measure stress? Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) standardized the amount of stress associated with a number of events in life (i.e. the most stressful, losing a spouse: 100, divorce: 73, etc.); if researchers were interested in looking at immigrants (for example), there would be different items on the list; standardized as per the situation - Person
