Lecture 17 Culture What is Culture? Cultures are dynamic The culture of your parents is not the culture of you The culture you experienced 10 years ago is not the culture you are experiencing now Its always changing Its dynamic It is constructive individual members of a culture make the culture, they construct their culture Culture affects you as well Youre affected by your culture but you can also change your culture Nationality o This is the primary way in which people tend to study culture o Go to Africa and collect data there o Crude method in studying culture Ethnicity o Not the nation, but the heritage that shapes who you are, this applies to family as well Identification o The shared identity of group members o Inter-group relations o You could be Canadian and your parents born somewhere else but you can identify with one of those identities or another identity Provides us with metaphysics o Your perceptions of the worlds as a whole, how the world works and why were here
