PSYB30 Wednesday, March 30, 2011 Lecture 20 Adler -innate feeling of inferiority that all humans have -starts in biological terms; organ inferiority -over time, psychology of bio fact; masculine protest -inferiority is the hallmark of human condition from as Adlerian point of view -Adler believed all ppl have this sense of inferiority; just a question of what you feel inferior about and to what extent -but no one is exempt; we all feel inferior about something -neurotic person; the inferiority we have and the compensation that we strive to make to overcome it -innate tension btwn inferiority and superiority that is hallmark of the person and neurotic person in particular -for Adler the neurotic personality is one who deals with intense feelings of inferiority; so intense expected to become self involved and focused; it becomes all encompassing and pre-occupied -the neurotic ind. can be characterized by the way they respond to the threats of self- worth -Adler cataloged various strategies he thought neurotic ind.s used to safeguard their self-worth -3 basic bundles; 1 class; rationalizing strategies; the tactical use of ones own symptoms to explain why one cant face up to various life challenges or demands -one way in which the neurotic ind. can protect his or her self-worth is to excuse himself from the challenges of life given the symptoms they have -they are excused for not having stable familyjob bc their symptoms get in the way and so explainexcuse why they are not able to meet the demands in contemporary societies 2-there are a series of aggressive strategies -include devaluing others when compared to oneself, blaming others for own sense of inferiority, or blaming oneself to receive attention from others 3-distancing; somewhat similar to rationalizing, but include efforts to restrict ones participation in life therefore limiting the possibilities one has to fail -refrain from taking on challenges so dont face possibility of failing -non-aggressive ways of keeping the challenges at a distance so they cant harm you or your self-worth -these are the strategies that are distinctive in the lives of neurotic ppl -although all of us may use them some point
