Description
psyb20 lecture 11 ▪ for the midterm: motor development -> up to and including language development ▪ Classification of Parenting Patterns ⁃ Diana baumrind ⁃ crossed types of parenting styles - variables warmth and control ⁃ authoritarian: parents want conformity - biased towards parents needs not childs needs ▪ late 40s/early50s increase in birth rate (baby boom) - steadily decreasing since that time - shift in the size of families ⁃ parents attitudes change as you add more children to the home, less time parents have to devote to each time as well as to each other ⁃ becomes more authoritarian ⁃ increase in delinquency and anti-social behaviour in children as more kids are added to the home ⁃ important caveat: family size is correlated with SES, larger families tend to be less well off than smaller families ⁃ # of these impacts might have to do with the standard of living and not the family size per se ▪ growing up with siblings ⁃ more children means less time with parents ⁃ siblings have a much more positive type of interaction ⁃ study that looked at home where mothers are preggo with second child ⁃ sharp drop in maternal involvement with first child when second child comes ⁃ increase in jealousy and negative behaviour in the children ⁃ also, the jealousy was just a minor part. there were positive social approaches from first borns to newborn siblings ▪ parents have pressure to have a second child ⁃ people say that one child will be selfish etc ⁃ stereotype is incorrect! ⁃ only children actually show advantages = more advanced in sociability, more willing to seek help from others, do better in school, higher education levels ⁃ has to do with the special parent-child relationship ▪ if you're forced to relocate because of a job loss, divorce etc = even short distance moves can add tremendous mount of disruptivee stress and disrupt the relationship ⁃ children begin to display negative behaviours = increased dependancy, rise of aggressiveness ▪ divorce rate in north america is 50% ▪ avg ti
