Mood disorders disabling disturbances in emotion. Depression emotional state marked by great sadness and feelings of worthlessness and guilt. Mania emotional state or mood of intense but unfounded elation accompanied by irritability, hyperactivity, talkativeness, flight of ideas, distractibility and grandiose plans. Loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities. Major depression sad, depression mood most of the day, almost every day. Difficulties in sleeping, not falling asleep initially, not returning to sleep after awakening in the middle of the night or early morning awakenings, maybe a desire to sleep a great deal of time. For depression to be there in general the five symptoms need to be there for about 2 weeks but this is flexible as the emphasis should be on the amount of disability caused.
