Chapter 21: Habit reversal Procedures Habit reversal: used to decrease frequency of undesirable habit behaviours. Habit behaviours often dont interfere to any great extent with the persons social functioning; tend to be more annoyance to the person or significant others. Habit disorder: when habit behaviour occurs frequently , the person may seek treatment for the problem. Causes great distress to the person. o Habit disorders may cause physical damage (e.g., hair loss, damage to nails or teeth) o Habit disorders may cause social stigma or embarrassment Habit behaviours: o Nervous habits: nailbitting, hair-pulling o Motor and vocal tics : head-jerking, facial grimacing Tourettes disorder o Stuttering: word repetitions, prolongations Habit Reversal Procedures: therapy session with the client who exhibits the habit disorder. o Awareness training Client learns to identify when the habit occurs or when it
