BEHAVIOUR AND MODIFICATION Chapter 24: Behavioural Contracts and Self-Management Using Behavioural Contracts  behavioural contract: contingency contract aka – formal doc that describes each target beh and states when it should or should not be performed as well as what the outcomes will be for performing the beh - a beh contract describes beh, specifies its antecedents and spells out the consequences that will apply in an intervention to change the beh Components of Behavioural Contracts  beh contracts are signed by target person – with at least one mediator  target beh and antecedents: agreement should specify the beh, when they should occur and beh goals – level of beh to be achieved  monitoring process: state who will observe beh – type of data collected and how data will be recorded and made available to determine consequences  consequences: info should have immediate and delayed rewards for meeting terms of contract – if dont meet terms = time out or response cost punishment  agreement should have schedule – for progress and signatures Settings forApplying Behavioural Contracts  can be in classrooms  clinics or institutions Benefits of Using Behavioural Contracts  reduce disagreements and errors in carrying out program because it ensures that parties know what their roles are and what conditions of the program are  parties to the contract tend to have a greater commitment to fulfilling their roles after they sign the agreement  conditions in writing = make target person's progress and closeness to meeting goals clearer  negotiating agreement increases likelihood that program contains elements that will lead to success  negotiating a contract and structuring diff interpersonal r/ship may help improve way the parties interact Using Self-Management Methods  self management: process of applying beh and cog methods to change one's beh  derive most from applied beh analysis and involve managing antecedents and consequences of target beh Goals in Self Management  can be with professional or just with u  4 broad goals: being more effective and efficient in daily life, breaking undesirable habits, developing desired lifestyle beh and mastering diff skills  ex reduce smoking, nail biting, increase exercise Self Monitoring and Behavioural Contracts  data collection and graphic analysis imp in applied beh analysis and self management  before self management – they perform functional assessment to determine exact beh and antecedent and consequences then data collection in baseline and intervention  diff between self management and applied behaviour analysis - self management are collected by target person not someone else – self monitoring (self observation) = target person observe their beh and records each instance of it – freq , magnitude or duration – self monitoring itself a beh change method in self management - self management usually have beh contract and target person always has a lot of control over provisions Managing
