Emotions lec 8 Cannon -cannon was concerned with 79% that events in the body dont cause full blown emotional experiences -centralist theory: the brain and brain mechanisms are governing emotion and feeling processes -peripheralist: james role of the viscera and muscle feedback for shaping emotional feelings -brain has inhibitory function, inhibits emotional expression -centralist: focus on brain mechanisms as on switch and off switch for emotional expression -james peripheral contrasts with centralist -emotion is affective by your gut, heart rate, gives back to facial feedback hypothesis- james -emotion is attached to a situation body and mind and create an emotiona experience -floyd allport: founder of moderm American social psych -north American: facial expression European: entire body -tomkins justifies face as focus of emotions Ekman and friesen -ekman, emotional expressions are universal -they will show emotions in the face and will be same emotions all over the world -ekman made a career in lie detection -the face is the place for emotion -info coming in, info going out, feel reaction and show reaction -emotion is part of experience and they are uniquely different and they are wired in -those who are reserved won’;t show emotions on the outside -those who have inhibition show great cycle sematic? They are burning up inside -expression of emotions allows us to interact with other people -look at their face get a sense of where they at -showing how you feel better for you health wise, and allows for communication with others Culturally defined display rules -therapy in japan don’t face the person or smile, ex of display rules -different cultures have diff rules about which emotions are acceptable -we imagine we are presenting ourselves in a certain way and trying to control our behavior expect what your holding in is being let out in another way - you think your in control and emotion are sliding out through channels your not aware of -trade off between control channels and unmonitor channels -u think you’ve got it under control, then you start to show emotions other ways -more honest we are with ourselves about the stress of the situation the less we have a build up in other places , less they will leak out and deter us -more aware we are the less we may dissolve into inproprieties Spontaneous vs posed facial expressions -the more we know ourselves -know if ur expressive or reserved -certain situations there may be a combo of emotions that don’t exist here, an interpretation of a sit is pulling together diff emotions -we in particular situations will have blends of emotions, there are not pure facial expressions because there are no pure emotional experiences -there are always blends that depend on the context -you have a situation that fits into your memories brings your body to bear configures an emotional situation -emotions are sustained by the body given the situation -always a blend given a situation against the background of your body Dimensional category approaches to facial expressions -dimensional active perspective -emotions are feelings filled with meanings and emotions implicate the self -take a good feeling give it a good context, turn into an emotional feeling -organic bodily states of pain or pleasure become foundat
