PSYB45 Lecture 17 Time Out o 90-95% of problems dealt with, with non-punishment procedures o Eg you want to use positive punishment because nothing else seems to work You need peer-reviewed and informed consent You need an expert above and beyond or laterally the same as you, who says what youre doing is ethical and ok o Have to make sure time-in environment is actually reinforcing Can be an issue when the person didnt want to be there in the first place so they engaged in aggressive behavior So youre reinforcing that o When a problematic behavior (PB) occurs, have to take them out immediately, no delay at all o While youre walking the child out the room or towards the chair some children may start struggling with their arm or start yelling to you You have to ignore this and keep doing what you are doing o Prevent escape If they escape they win o You cant bring them out while they are being combative?? o So in the room if the child is being combative and kicking stuff and what not even if 20min have passed you cant let them out o Can only let out eg if sit for 2min doing nothing and cortisol goes down, nervous system goes down, calm, quiet etc, then you can let them come out o Mathew and colleagues study Kids in dangerous behavior Touching electrical sockets etc Basically Darwin saying theyre not supposed to exist anymore but the psychologist came and intervened
